Education: One Aspect of the Interpretation Division
By Athena Siquerios, Interpretation

Although the season has ended in April, the interpretation staff remains busy working on projects that enhance the visitor experience. One facet of the division’s summer projects is the educational aspect geared towards children. Vicki Wolfe, Nancy Hadlock, Trina Lapinsky and Athena Siqueiros currently comprise the Junior Ranger development team.

The team has several goals in mind this summer to accomplish prior to the upcoming season which begins in mid October. Several goals have already been achieved one of which was translating the Junior Ranger activity booklet into Spanish. The booklet was translated to reach out to youths in the surrounding community who might otherwise not understand what Death Valley National Park is all about or what the National Park Service in general aims to accomplish. With the help of the Death Valley Natural History Association, 200 booklets have been printed. Another goal set was to conduct live junior ranger programs in the park one to three times per week during school vacation weeks.

Rangers successfully integrated these programs into the regular program schedules. A special certificate to be awarded to participants at the conclusion of a live junior ranger program was also developed— an extra effort to enhance children’s National Park experience.

The Death Valley National Park Junior Ranger Program now has a special pencil to go along with the activity book thanks to a generous grant from an anonymous donor.  Presently the main focus is revising and adding activities to the current activity booklet. Ideas have been solicited from other NPS staff members in order to include the whole park in the process. The goal is to have the revised booklet completed and printed next fall.
