Stovepipe Dune Improvements
The Stovepipe Dunes, also known as the Mesquite Flat Dunes, is one of the most heavily visited and photographed sites in Death Valley National Park. What is being done to improve this wondrous area?

They are located in the central part of Death Valley adjacent to Stovepipe Wells Village. California Highway 190 skirts the southern boundary of the dunes and offers the easiest access for visitors. Unfortunately there are no designated parking facilities along Highway 190. Visitors are allowed to park along the wide shoulder of the road. Exhibits about the dunes are limited to a single information panel which is often missed by the majority of visitors. The posted speed limit along this stretch of highway is 60 mph.

Safety is the primary reason the National Park Service and Caltrans are looking for alternative ways to get visitors away from a busy travel route and into the dunes. A new visitor use area can also be a focal point where visitors can get information about the dunes geologic and natural history as well as safety and resource protection messages. Restrooms are also being considered to help reduce the amount of toilet paper and human waste now being left throughout the margins of the dunes. CLICK HERE for more information.
