Avoid Light Pollution

Despite its secluded location, Death Valley experiences light pollution from Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells emit light pollution as well. Because of this, some areas of the park are darker than others. Consider heading further North or away from developed areas for darker skies.

Avoid the Moon

The bright light of the moon causes many stars to fade into the background. Check the moon rise and moon set times for the best viewing experience. For a great view throughout the night, visit during a New Moon!

Stay Out Long Enough

It can take as long as 45 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Don’t give up, and don’t look at your phone while you wait! The screen light will delay adjustment.

Use a Red Light

Your eyes are the most sensitive to the blue-to-green range of colors (i.e flashlights, phone screens) and less sensitive to red. Because of this, red lights are ideal for stargazing. If you don’t have a red light, you can put a piece of red cellophane over a regular flashlight.
